Joanna Jarvis, the founder and cake designer behind Heavenly Tiers, made her first steps in cake decoration when she volunteered to make her sister’s wedding cake in 2007. As a keen home baker, this very special project showed Joanna that there was a real art to creating delicious cakes that were also beautiful, finished with perfectly smooth fondant and delicate sugarcraft flowers.
This was to be the catalyst in learning the art of sugarcraft, and led to Joanna taking courses in Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft Level 1, 2 & 3 at Edinburgh College, followed by advanced Cake Decoration classes at Midlothian Council. Keen to continue to learn from the best, refine her skills and practice new techniques, she has also completed courses at Paul Bradford School of Sugarcraft.
In 2010, Joanna launched Heavenly Tiers on a part-time basis while she pursued her career in Community Learning and Development. In 2016, Joanna took the decision to focus on her love of baking and successfully completed a Professional Diploma in Patisserie at the Edinburgh School of Food and Wine. Heavenly Tiers is now her full-time business and she has expanded the range to include wedding and celebration cakes alongside favours and delicious confections for dessert tables.
Drawing on her background in Community Education, Joanna enjoys sharing her knowledge of cake decoration and has delivered many bespoke classes, both for young people and adults. In addition, she’s also an established tutor for Midlothian Council, offering classes at all levels from Beginners to Intermediate.
Heavenly Tiers is registered and inspected by Midlothian Council and insured by British Sugar Craft Guild.
